  1. Concert Details - Saturday December 7th

    1. Rehearsal - 1pm to 4pm. Please get in your seats by 12.50 but please don’t arrive too early - give Veronica and I a chance to label the seats. The seat plan is the usual but please click here to refresh your memory.

    2. Concert starts at 7.30pm. Pleases be ready to join the stage by 7.20. Veronica will give further instructions later.

    3. Concert Dress :

Gentlemen –  Black Trousers, black shirts, jackets and gold handkerchiefs

Ladies –           Black trousers or ankle-length black skirts, black long-sleeved tops                                          jackets and gold scarves.

Please remember to put your music into your black Waynflete folders. We are on camera, if only a static one!

      2. Christmas Market - Thursday 5th December 5.00pm

Please arrive at the stage in the food hall in the inner close by 4.50pm - I suggest you avoid the entrance by the West Door and come in by the skype or St Swithun’s Street. John Lunt (B2) is conducting and has sent the programme using the green Carols for Choirs 1. We hope to sing the Ukranian carol The Carol of the Bells, please bring your own copy which you can find using this link.

    4. Christmas Cards, payments and Tickets for Concerts

Both are still available. The cards will be at this week’s rehearsal. £5 for 6.

Please note that all payments at choir are being done electronically using cards/phones. This is easier for Susan Rees and Kate Baker in that getting cash in reasonable quantities is very difficult nowadays and paying in cash can also be problematic.

      5. A Staging Request from Veronica

As you know we are trying a new venue for our Summer concert in 2025. The Guildhall does not have any suitable staging we can use so we are looking to borrow or hire some so we all have good sight lines at the concert. This would cost the choir a substantial amount if we hire from a specialist company. We need something similar to that used at Winchester College this summer. If any of you work in a school, college, university or other establishment that might have some staging we could hire or borrow over the weekend of 28th June 2025, please could you let Veronica know at veronica.kshaw@gmail.com

      Thank you.

  1. Final push on ticket sales

Now is the time for a final push on tickets for next weekend. Please put up any posters that you quite haven’t got around to, and make sure any flyers are put to good use – please think about village noticeboards, cafes, newsagents, your local church, your front window. Every little helps!  Some of us have found that sharing the flyer image on neighbourhood WhatsApp groups can be remarkably successful. Here is the flyer.

2.  Flyer Amnesty

If you have a few flyers that you won’t get around to using, do please bring them back so we can use them next week in city centre hotels.

 3. Christmas Card Sales

Thank you to all those who have bought Waynflete Christmas cards, we have sold 122 packs so far and it would be great to push that up to at least 200 . They will continue on sale for the next two rehearsals at £5.00 per pack. This is a fundraising initiative and if we sell all the cards, we will raise close to £900 for the choir, which goes a long way to covering the cost of a decent soloist for a concert. Those that don’t sell will be saved for sale next year. To remind you, it’s £5 for a pack of 6 cards. Click here for a look at the front of the card.

4. Rehearsal - Saturday 7th December - 1pm to 4pm

5. Christmas Market - Thursday 5th December 5pm

There’s still time to sign up by clicking on to this website. We have 11 Sopranos; 10 Altos; 3 Tenors and 9 Basses……so far!

John Lunt (B2) will be conducting us and has kindly put together a ‘programme’ all from the Green Carols for Choirs 1. Please find the list here - and bring it with you on the night. Try to look as colourful and festive as the weather allows and don’t leave your smiles at home!

Please aim to turn up for 4.50pm so we are ready to sing at 5. I suggest you enter the market either from St Swithun’s Street or via the slype, so avoiding the potentially large queues by the West Door.

2. A Message from Veronica re Help on Saturday 5th December

Thank you to the people who have volunteered to help with moving the organ. We now have enough to do this safely.

A couple of people said they might be able to stand/sit by the South door between 12 noon and the start of the rehearsal. Please could they email me on veronica.kshaw@gmail.com or see me at Thursday's rehearsal to confirm this is still the case.

Thank you.

3. Waynflete Christmas Cards

We sold 100 packs last week, we still have 200 left. This is a great potential fund raiser so please think about buying some (more?) at this week’s rehearsal.

  1. Welcome Back - Voice Stock Taking

Welcome back after half term. The voice stocktaking exercise begins this week the full list is found here. Please arrive 5 minutes before your time so that we don’t get behind on the schedule. Also try not to disturb the rehearsal when you join late. Thank you.

  2. Concert Help

    A message from Veronica:
On the day of the concert we will need a few volunteers as follows:

    1.  Someone to stay by the South door to ensure only orchestra members and soloists go in and out. This is from 12 noon until the start of the rehearsal at 1pm. It could be a choir member or friend/spouse/adult child etc.

    2. A few people - 4 if possible - to move the chamber organ. The vergers have said they cannot do so for H&S reasons. We have been informed there will be a ramp. We assume it will need to be moved back at the end of the concert, but will get this confirmed. We need to arrange a time between 11.30 and 12.30 to ensure it is in place for the start of the rehearsal. Again, choir members or adult friends/spouse etc.

      Please contact Veronica at veronica.kshaw@gmail.com

    3. Concert Publicity

Please keep spreading the word, we must sell the tickets and Christmas is a busy time for concerts. Here is the flyer.

Wayns Weekly 22nd October 2024

  1. Rehearsal This Week and Music

Just to remind everyone that there is a rehearsal this week. Half term is next week - no rehearsal therefore on Thursday 31st October.

Susan Rees has been extremely busy ordering the final bits of music (from France!). There has been a slight problem with the Wachet Auf. The hire copies have arrived and will be available this week , however the new copies for buying have not. We will be collecting the £2 hire fee (by card) this Thursday, providing you not have ordered any other music.

The new copies of the Bach will be available after half term on 7th November together with copies of Andy Lumsden’s Silent Night and Verdi’s Requiem. All other money will be collected by card on that night.

2. Voice Stocktake

For those who weren't at the AGM (and, indeed, for those that were) we discussed that we have imbalances and gaps across the choir and we need to focus our recruiting efforts to try to remediate this.  But the first thing for us to understand is exactly where we are starting from.   We haven't done any formal re-auditions for a while and so we haven't considered individual voices and whether we might be able to move some B1s to B2, or S2s to S1 etc.  So we have decided to do a quick "stocktake".

The idea is to make this as painless as possible.  After half term, everyone will be invited in groups of about 6, within your part, to have a short slot with Andy before a rehearsal.  During your slot Andy will do a quick range test and then take you through effectively a brief sectional rehearsal on some of the music we are doing this term.  It's absolutely not a re-audition, and there is no sense of passing or failing, but it will help us to get a much more detailed view of what we currently have in the choir and where we need to focus efforts to keep us as a balanced, capable ensemble.

Kate Spencer and your part reps will be in touch with timings, and I would ask you to try to make your allocated session if at all possible - we (and I suspect you!) would rather do the groups by part than have groups made up of several singers from different parts of the choir.

Thanks

Daniel

3. Concert Flyers.

The flyer for A Classical Christmas is available here. Please circulate as much as possible. Please also note that Sarah Jones is bringing hard copies, both A5 and A4. Please only take what you need and can put up in places where they can be seen.

i)AGM Thursday 17th October

Please make a note of this date and turn up. A reminder we have a short rehearsal followed by a social gathering of wine and nibbles (A1s in charge this year!). ii) Singing at the Christmas Market - Thursday 5th December

We now have a time and date for this: 5pm on Thursday 5th December. We have a half hour slot and hope that we can muster 50 of you for this time.

2. Priority Booking for December Concert Closes on Friday 27th September

Please send your ticket requests in to Sarah Delany sarah.delany@btinternet.com, who has kindly offered to liaise with the Cathedral again.

1. Bayeux Trip

There have been some issues with downloading the form for those who use ipads so I have sent an attachment out on a WW email in the hope it will help. Otherwise, please click here.

2. The Move to Card Payments for Choir Music

The main reason for this is that it is increasingly difficult to deal with large sums of cash. Trying to get a cash float of a mere £20 is almost impossible and has taken Susan Rees a lot of time and effort, not that she has complained. It is also easier and quicker on the night, one tap and you're away not having to fumble with cash, change etc! Some people have asked about the cost of doing this. It is negligible.

Please note though that the 100 club will be run using cash so please bring your tenners to the next rehearsal.

3. Priority Booking for December Concert is Now Open

Choir priority booking for our Christmas concert will run till Friday 27th September, before public booking opens on the 28th. Please send your ticket requests in to Sarah Delany sarah.delany@btinternet.com, who has kindly offered to liaise with the Cathedral again.

Tickets prices are the same as the last concert:

  • A - M - £50

  • N to T - £40

  • U to HH - £30

  • JJ to PP - £25

  • QQ to back and side aisles - £15

A few selling points on this concert:

  • Beethoven’s Mass in C will open the proceedings , a work of profound emotional depth

  • The second half is devoted to Christmas music , including Bach’s wonderful cantata ‘Wachet Auf!’ (Sleepers Wake!)

  • There will be carols for both choir and audience

  • The Waynflete carols include Andy Lumsden’s own setting of Silent Night as well as our very own Tim Cain’s prize-winning carol ‘Let us now go to Bethlehem’ . This carol was awarded joint first prize in the Sir David Wilcocks carol competition of 2022  run by the Bach choir -  judged by David Hill, Jonathan Wilcocks and Cecilia McDowell (no less)

  • We are accompanied by the English Chamber Orchestra, with a stellar line up of soloists. The tenor soloist is Benjamin Hulett – well known to the choir, who joined us last year in Benjamin Britten’s St Nicolas, many will remember his truly spell-bounding performance

  • And of course we have Andy Lumsden conducting! We are so privileged to have his continuing musical direction.

The concert flyer can be found under the flyers and publicity tab on the members’ page, click here. Please download it and forward to your friends and family.

If you have music to collect please come early so we can start on time at 7.30. We will be collecting money by card. Although there will be an opportunity to pay by cash, we would prefer payments by card.

2. Payment of Subs - a Message from Kate Baker, Treasurer

Thanks to those who have already paid their members subs for this year and a reminder to everyone else that payment is now due. The total for the year is £200. If you would like to pay in 2 instalments please send £100 now and £100 before 31st December. I hope you agree that it still represents excellent value for money: we have an exciting programme ahead this year, with superb orchestras and amazing soloists. 1. Concert and Thanks

What a fantastic concert we had on Saturday. A big thanks to many people;

Andy Lumsden - for getting so much out of us on the evening with good humour and aplenty of enthusiasm.

George Castle - for the rehearsals he has taken and played for this term. We are so lucky to have him as our number 1 support act. And then he wows us with his wonderful playing in the concert. Not quite the United Church piano but he coped! So good to hear him play a good piano.

Andy Hayman - for stepping up and playing for our rehearsals.

David Owen Norris - for giving us yet another superbly entertaining demonstration of the versatility and brilliance of his piano playing.

Also well done to Sarah Jones for getting the publicity out there and ensuring the tickets get sold; Lea Holmes for finding the soloists; Veronica Shaw for liaising with Winchester College and sorting out the wine, seating etc.; Susan Rees for sourcing and sorting the music (and to Sarah Delany for helping with this); Chris Town for producing the concert programme and Duncan Eves for contributing to said programme.

I apologise if I have missed any one out, easily done, as many people are needed to get concerts and rehearsals off the ground.

1. Message from Andy Lumsden

 Dear all,

As many of you will know, things have been rather complicated at the cathedral over the past month or two, and that combined with preparations for SCF have meant I have missed rather more rehearsals than Daniel lets you all get away with. I know some of you are nervous with the concert coming up very soon that I haven't been about much.  Can I just confirm that I definitely plan to be there for the next couple of rehearsals and for the concert, and can I thank George for doing such a brilliant job of covering for me.

 Andy

 2. Message from Daniel re Subs for Next Year

Dear all,

Your committee has been looking at our financial situation.  As you will recall from the discussions at our last couple of AGMs, putting on concerts with the sort of soloists and orchestras we want to work with is getting more and more expensive.  If we completely fill the cathedral we can just about break even on a concert, but generally we make a loss.  Thanks to all of your efforts in selling tickets, our loss last year was not as bad as it could have been, but we haven't generated an excess; and, as you know, we have big plans for the next year: the Verdi Requiem will be an expensive thing to put on.

After much discussion, we have reluctantly decided to set the subs for next year at £200.  This is a £15 increase, but still works out at around £7 per rehearsal.  Kate Baker will be in touch before the beginning of next term about payment, and as always, we will try to be as flexible as possible for those who find it easier to pay in chunks, rather than all in one go.

I'm always happy to chat to any of you about any concerns on our committee decisions, but whilst I would rather not be putting up subs, I hope you think this is not excessive and still provides good value for the experience we have in singing such brilliant music together.

Thanks

Daniel

It would be great if between us we could muster nibbles and canapés to bring and share. Please email Sarah Jones:  sj@luminaconsulting.com to let her know if you’re bringing something. (This is mostly to ensure we don’t end up with thirty plates of sausage rolls! ). Time to put on your culinary thinking caps!

An Invitation from Daniel Benton for Thursday 13th June

Dear all,

As I mentioned at last week's rehearsal, we thought it might be a nice idea to use one of the many rehearsal slots we have this term for a social get-together.

I'd therefore like to invite you all to drinks and nibbles at my house from 7pm on June 13th. I live about 10 minutes outside Winchester at Oak House, Park Lane, Ropley, SO24 0BE. It's rather in the middle of a field, so public transport won't help much, and so although we have ample (free!) parking, it may be a good idea to try to organise car shares with your chums to enable you to drink safely. The plan would be to be in the garden, but if it's wet there is plenty of room indoors, and we could even have a rehearsal in the music room...

What3words for the gate is "viewing.inclined.tentacles" and for the parking field (10 yards away from the gate) is "theme.porch.lifeboats". For those who use more traditional means, directions from Winchester are included below.

Could I ask you all to email me on daniel.benton@btinternet.com to let me know if you will be coming, just so that I have a vague idea of numbers ?

Do come if you can - it will be nice for everyone to get a chance to chat outside of the usual United Church setting.

Daniel

Directions to Oak House from Winchester: Take the A31 from Winchester towards Alton. After about 4 miles, you’ll get to a roundabout on the A31 at the turning to Alresford where the A31 goes from dual carriageway to single. Carry on along the A31 to the next roundabout (about 2 miles) where you turn right (signposted to Bramdean and the Old Park Industrial Estate). If you get to a Shell petrol station on your right you’ve gone too far. After turning right, after about 250 yards there’s a tiny turning to the left, opposite some big barns, with a post box on the corner. Be brave and take the left turn. You go up a little hill and can see our house over the fields in front of you. Follow the lane for a mile and a bit (it turns to the left at Jefford Cottage) and you will pass the imposing iron gates of Harcombe House on your right. 100 yards after that you get to the rather more modest wooden gates of Oak House. Can’t possibly go wrong.

Afternoon Rehearsal Time for 6th July Concert

Please note that the rehearsal for this concert will be from 1pm to 3pm.

The Waynflete Obit - Saturday 17th August 2024

This year our Evensong is later than the anniversary of the death of Bishop Waynflete on 11th August 1486, but I hope being a Saturday some singers who are in full-time employment may be able to join us.

The service will feature music by Anthony Caesar in the 100th anniversary year of his birth. Born in Southampton he was a boy Chorister at Winchester Cathedral, and returned as Precentor and member of Chapter. In retirement he was Chaplain at the Hospital of St Cross.

I will be circulating a sign-up sheet later in the term, but please note Saturday 17th August in your diaries, with a practice at St Cross on Thursday 15th August at 7.30pm.

Blog Post Title Four

It all begins with an idea.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sound like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest. If you read the words back and don’t hear your own voice in your head, that’s a good sign you still have more work to do.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
