St Nicholas

  • Winchester Cathedral 9 The Close Winchester, SO23 9LS UK (map)

We are joined by the English Chamber Orchestra for our ever popular pre-Christmas concert, on this occasion a double billing of St Nicholas. The concert  will open with Haydn's Symphony No 30, nicked-named the 'Alleluia' Symphony, a vibrant and lively start to the proceedings . This will be followed by Haydn’s St Nicholas Mass, a work of infectious joy and good cheer. The second half is dedicated Benjamin Britten’s St Nicolas Cantata, a narration of the life of St Nicolas, Bishop of Myrna, and his good works - a lively story complete with sea voyage, storm, saving the daughters of a poor man from a life of prostitution, and the resurrection of three pickled boys! A superb line-up of soloists, with outstanding tenor Benjamin Hulett in the role of Saint Nicolas, and three boy choristers will bring both works to life.
