In Memory of Martin Neary

It is with deep sadness that the Waynflete Singers have learnt of the recent death of Martin Neary, our Director of Music from 1972-1988.

Martin made an extraordinary contribution to music and the choral world, both at Winchester Cathedral and Westminster Abbey, where he is remembered by many for his role in directing the music for the funeral service of Princess Diana.

The Waynflete Singers were privileged to be directed by him for sixteen years, during which time he honed the choir’s skills, extended our repertoire and encouraged the choir continually to challenge itself and grow, whilst bringing great warmth and humour to rehearsals.

The Waynflete Singers offer their heartfelt condolences to Martin's wife Penny, his family and loved ones. We are profoundly grateful for his life and the profound impact he had on our choir and the musical world.

He was interviewed by one of our sopranos, Catharine Tucker, in January 2020, for our Golden Anniversary concert programme, and we are delighted to share the interview again here via this link: https://www.waynfletesingers.org.uk/s/Martin-Neary-Wayns-Interview.pdf
