Coronation Concert
March 18th - A thrilling Coronation concert to a packed Winchester Cathedral , with a fabulous line-up of soloists and the BSO in fine (if slightly loud) form. Here is an excerpt from the review by Derek Beck : Walton’s Coronation Te Deum for 1953 is powerfully ceremonial and here we could easily distinguish the rich contemporary choral harmonies (expertly delivered by the Wayns) from the brilliant fanfare-like brass writing. Sub-sections of the choir added contrast of texture to this fine piece. And there were still sumptuous soft, often unaccompanied, passages to be savoured from the voices in parts of the Coronation Ode and in the earlier 1911 motet O hearken thou.
The video below, a wonderful reminder of the close of the concert, has been shared by a member of the audience. Whilst we would not condone the videoing of a live performance, we have agreed with the BSO that we can show it here on our members’ page. For performing rights reasons it cannot be shared in the public domain. SO enjoy it here!
